Just a few days after Autoblog confirmed that Volkswagen will debut a sportier version of the Jetta compact sedan at the Chicago Auto Show in February, spy photos of the GLI variant running at the Nürburgring race track have surfaced.

According to the car-enthusiast news outlet, the performance-oriented version will feature a modern multi-link independent rear suspension and a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, likely the same unit found in the current Golf GTI, which produces 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

A 6-speed manual transmission will be available along with the DSG 7-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission.

As for the looks, spy shots show a few changes in the front grille, lower suspension, a subtle but much needed spoiler for high-speed stability, dual tail pipes, red brake calipers and a set of wheels pretty similar to those on the GTI.

As with other variants, production of the Jetta GLI for the North American market will take place at the Volkswagen assembly plant in Puebla.
