Opportunities for sustainable banana production in Colima

According to Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Agricultura, bananas are grown in more than 130 countries, with a production volume of 125.3 million tons, with India in first place, with 30.4 million tonnes in 2017, representing 24.3% of total production.

During 2016, 1 out of every 5 tons of bananas produced in Mexico was destined for the foreign market. World exports reached just over 21.9 million tons, while domestic exports represented 21.1%, with a value of US$195.8 million.

According to Servicio de Información Agroalimentaria y Pesquera (SIAP) 2017, in Mexico, per capita consumption is 15.7 kg, with a positive trade balance of US$195.5 million.

Mexico participates with 2.2 million, representing 2.2% of world volume, and ranks 12th place. The largest production is in the south-southeast region of the country, due to adequate geographical conditions for the production of the crop.

In 2017 the state of Colima ranked 4th in banana production, with a production of 178,487 tons, representing 8% of national production in a cultivated area of 6,027, distributed in five municipalities of the state.
