The automotive industry in Mexico has been affected in recent days by train tracks blockades from members of Section 18 from Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (CNTE) in the state of Michoacán.

Business leaders and logistics executives met at the Automotive Logistics Mexico (ALM) 2019 and shared comments with attendees and the press about the situation prevailing in the country.

From very early on, Eduardo Solís, president of Asociación Mexicana de la Industria Automotriz  (AMIA), talked about the importance of the automotive industry for the country, being the main source of foreign currency (of little more than US$70 billion) and how it contributes 20.2% to manufacturing GDP.

"Railroad tracks cannot be blocked and interrupt the value chain," Solis said at the end of his participation in ALM, referring to the current train tracks blockades by members of the CNTE demanding the payment of overdue bonds, holiday bonus and ISR retribution.

Solís assured that there have been affectations in at least two plants, although he did not indicate which of them were affected nor the level of the damage.
