Sales of hybrid cars skyrocket 98%, but demand of fully electric units keeps downward

Auto dealers in Mexico sold 1,768 electrified vehicles in November 2018, nearly twice as much as those sold in the same month of the previous year, shows the latest data made available by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).

According to revised figures from the INEGI, in November 2017 sales of electrified vehicles totaled 915 units, which means deliveries skyrocketed 93.2% year-on-year.

Year-to-date sales of electrified cars and light trucks from January through November were 15,693 vehicles, a 71% hike compared to the 9,177 vehicles from the same 11-month period from the previous year.

November sales comprised of 1,752 hybrid cars, which is 98.2% more than the 884 units sold in the same month of 2017. However, sales of fully electric vehicles totaled just 16 units, representing a 48.4% decline compared to the 31 cars sold in November 2017.

Sales from January through November comprised of 15,517 hybrid cars, a 72.8% hike compared to deliveries from the same period a year before. Meanwhile, sales of fully electric vehicles through November totaled 176 units, which represents a 21.4% drop compared to the 224 units sold during the same 11-month period from 2017.

Half of sales nationwide take place in the country’s capital and the neighboring state of Mexico, with 35.9% and 15.3% of total respectively. That’s because car owners in both jurisdictions are subject to strict environmental regulations that limit the use of their vehicles, however, hybrids and electric units are exempt from these barriers.
