OECD recognizes Mexico for its low level of unemployment

MEXICO — At the end of 2018, the average unemployment rate in Mexico was 3.3%, the fourth lowest among the countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), only behind the Czech Republic, Japan and Iceland. 

According to data from the international organization, with this result, the unemployment rate in Mexico was nine years down, from a level of 5.48% in 2009, and below the OECD average during 2018, of 5.3%.

The monthly report says that at the end of last year there were 1,850,000 unemployed in Mexico, a figure that means 4,000 fewer people compared to the 1,854,000unemployed at the end of 2017.

OECD specifies that during 2018 the unemployment rate among Mexican youth (aged 15 to 24 years) was 6.9% and 2.6% among those over 25 years and over, while the unemployment rate among women was 3.5% and 3.2% in men.

For 36 countries that are part of the OECD, the unemployment rate at the end of 2018 fell to 5.3%, from 5.8% in 2017, its eighth consecutive year to the downside.
