VERACRUZ — In a work meeting, Víctor Villalobos, head of Secretaría de Agricultura y Desarrollo Rural, and Kris Peeters, Belgian deputy prime minister, agreed on the importance of expanding trade between both countries in terms of agricultural products and in the exchange of information, through joint cooperation, in relation to health and safety issues.

Another issue that both authorities focused on was the need to optimize production chains to achieve a complementary market that achieves the recognition of the member countries of the European Union.

In the meeting that took place in the facilities of the agency, both Villalobos Arámbula and Kris Peeters stressed the importance of finding the right mechanisms to improve regulations and technologies that allow the production of agri-food products to strengthen exports for the benefit of producers and consumers of both countries. Mexico imports from Belgium products such as milk powder, cheese, butter and cottage cheese, among others.

As a whole, the European Union represents the second market for Mexico regarding the agri-food sector, only in 2017 exports in this area amounted to US$1.465 billion.
