UP, AEM and MIT will develop a new nanosatellite

MEXICO  – The Mexican Space Agency (AEM) and Universidad Panamericana (UP), in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), will develop and launch a nanosatellite which will be capable of measuring the atmospheric density of the Earth by 2021.

The satellite is named Pakal, in allusion to a Mayan king, and is part of the Colibrí Mission, developed by a team of more than 25 students from the UP campus Aguascalientes and CDMX, who will contribute in the design of the satellite and the planning of the mission.

"This AEM-UP collaboration will contribute to develop national space technology that will boost connectivity and growth for the country," said Javier Mendieta Jiménez, general director of the AEM.

This collaborative mission is purely academic, and aims to perform atmospheric measurements and mappings. The settlement between the AEM, UP and MIT aims to strengthen the infrastructure of technological innovation in space, seek public and private funds to finance the satellite and collaborate throughout the process until the launch.

Additionally, this project will have the collaboration of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and it is expected that other agencies will join
