Mexican auto sales decrease during September
MEXICO - Sales of light vehicles in Mexico decreased during September, when 116,543 units were sold, 1.4% less than the same month of 2023, when companies sold 118,252 units. This figure represents the first fall for a ninth month since 2021, INEGI reported.
According to INEGI's administrative registry of the light vehicle automotive industry, 17 of the 31 brands that report their sales registered double-digit decreases, including Nissan and General Motors, which are the leaders in the commercialization of light vehicles in the country.
Guillermo Rosales, president of the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA) explained that in September it was observed that the previous months had been stronger than estimated and that now there seems to be an adjustment in demand.
However, he also mentioned that Chinese competition, which has not yet registered its sales with INEGI, could be altering the behavior of the market, as it is a novelty for Mexican consumers.
Regarding the performance against the immediately preceding month, there was a decrease of 11,141 units in new light vehicles sold, that is, a drop of 8.7% with respect to August 2024 -a month that surprised with its upward figures to make adjustments in the annual commercialization-.
INEGI informed that from January to September 2024, 1 million 79,413 light vehicles were sold, which represents an increase of 10.5% over the 976,542 units from January-September of the previous year.
