Volvo plant construction starts in NL

NUEVO LEON - Volvo Group started the construction of its first cargo truck plant in Nuevo León, which will be the company's largest in the world and will start operations in the summer of 2026.

This facility, located in the municipality of Ciénega de Flores, will seek to meet the demand for up to 25,000 trucks per year.

“The Mexican market continues to expand; we are talking about an industry that buys 25,000 heavy duty trucks per year. It is strategic for us to focus on growing in this area,” said Stephen Roy, president of Mack Trucks.

The project required an investment of US$700 million and will generate up to 2,500 jobs for the state.

The ceremony and protocol ceremony was attended by local authorities and executives of the Swedish company, who highlighted Nuevo León as one of the ideal destinations to grow their business and invest.

The land where the plant will be built is 127 hectares in size, of which 94 hectares will be used for the factory and the rest for the implementation of a Pocket Park where suppliers can be installed.

In his message, Roy also said that this plant will assemble the latest and most modern products, mainly to serve the North American market.

"Mexico is an important market for our industry,” he said.

In turn, the governor of the state, Samuel García, said that once the plant was installed, a commitment was also made to offer them the possibility of supplying the North American market with the latest products.

“Volvo chose Ciénega de Flores, Nuevo León from many countries and many states in Mexico to build its largest plant in the world, firstly, because of the logistics and proximity to the United States, here we are an hour and a half from Texas, they will use the new customs through the La Gloria-Colombia highway”, he indicated.

He also said that it will be a priority to completely rehabilitate the road to Laredo.

“Together with the mayor (of Ciénega de Flores) we are going to manage the complete repair of the road to Laredo and make the roads and enough accessories so that in a year and a half the plant will be working and the accesses will be ready,” the governor said.

For his part, José María Garza Treviño, president of GP Construcción y GP Desarrollos, the company that will be in charge of the design and construction of the plant, emphasized that “Volvo has placed its trust in Nuevo León, and today this challenge has become a tangible reality.
