Hybrid and electric car sales and production are on the rise: AMDA

Sales of electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles in Mexico increased by 26.3% during March 2025 compared to the same month of 2024, with 12,225 cars sold compared to 9,680 units, informed the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA).

During the first quarter of 2025, 33,360 “green” vehicles were sold, representing an increase of 30.1% compared to the same period of 2024.

Electric and hybrid vehicles have gained relevance in total car sales in Mexico, representing a 9.1% share, since their introduction to the Mexican market 9 years ago.

“This makes a total of 23 consecutive months with a share of over 5% in the Mexican market,” said the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA).

The brands with the largest presence with this type of units are Toyota with its hybrid versions, especially its compact Prius, or Volvo, which is the leader in electric vehicles.

Mexico City remains as the leader in green car sales with 8,427 units, followed by the State of Mexico with 4,746 units, Nuevo Leon with 3,401 units, Jalisco with 2,685 units, and Guanajuato with 1,526 units.

The first five states represent 58% of the total sales of hybrid, electric and plug-in vehicles.

AMIA stated that the production of electric and hybrid vehicles was 57,601 units from January to March 2025, which represented a 179% growth compared to the same period of 2024, when the industry produced 20,676 units.

At the close of 2024, the industry manufactured 169,929 units, versus 106,527 cars.

General Motors, Ford and Stellantis Jeep produced 46,697 electric vehicles for export destination, while Toyota assembled 10,904 Tacoma hybrids.
