BMW Surpasses Half a Million Cars Produced in San Luis Potosí

The Bavarian automaker BMW announced that its plant in San Luis Potosí assembled its 500,000th vehicle, a milestone that took place six years after the official opening of this manufacturing complex.

The vehicle that reached this milestone is a high-performance M2 coupe in Velvet Blue, part of the CS edition, which began production last August alongside the Racing variant.

It should be noted that during preparations for the launch of this program, BMW took a prototype of the M2 CS to the legendary Nürburgring track in Germany, where the car, still wrapped in traditional camouflage, became the fastest compact production vehicle to lap this circuit.

“We proudly celebrate the production of the 500,000th vehicle at our plant, an M2 CS Velvet Blue. This milestone reflects the commitment and passion of our entire team, which drives the quality and innovation that distinguish BMW every day,” said Harald Gottsche, president and CEO of this facility.

The plant, located in the municipality of Villa de Reyes, officially began operations in June 2019 with the production of the iconic 3 Series sedan.

Two years later, in September 2021, the complex began assembling the compact 2 Series coupe, while the sporty M2 variant began rolling off the production line in December 2022.

Last September, the facility recorded a 15.5% uptick in activity compared to the same month last year, driven by increases of 33.2%, 14.6%, and 9.9% in production volumes for the 2 Series, M2, and 3 Series, respectively.

At the end of the third quarter, sales of the 2 Series and M2 variant in the U.S. market had risen by more than 40% compared to the same period last year.
