Experts from Mexico & the EU discuss the future of trade

Mexico initiated a dialogue with the European Union to assess its position in international trade ahead of the upcoming review of the USMCA, with a focus on export diversification and attracting foreign investment. The discussion was organized by the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO), in partnership with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom Mexico.
Experts analyzed the feasibility of Mexico expanding its export markets beyond the United States, even if only marginally; the discussion included leveraging the Free Trade Agreement between Mexico and the European Union (TLCUEM), considered a key tool for strengthening Mexico’s presence in high-value-added sectors.
While Mexico’s role as an industrial hub within North America—with advantages in manufacturing, logistics, and market access—was highlighted, it was emphasized that the country must strengthen its integration into value chains linked to future-oriented industries, such as clean technologies, electromobility, and semiconductors.
The discussion concluded with the need to consolidate an agenda that boosts Mexico’s competitiveness in the international arena through regulatory improvements and greater use of existing trade agreements, which could translate into new opportunities for industrial development and the attraction of capital in the medium term.
