Aeroméxico Suggests Terminal 3 at Mexico City Airport

Aeroméxico’s CEO, Andrés Conesa, has proposed building a third terminal at Mexico City International Airport (AICM) as a long-term solution to ease congestion and improve operational efficiency at the country’s busiest airport.

According to the airline’s leadership, Terminals 1 and 2 are operating close to their maximum capacity, especially during peak hours, which leads to bottlenecks, delays, and a less efficient passenger experience. A new terminal would allow the airport to significantly expand its annual passenger capacity and offer greater flexibility in flight scheduling.

The proposal envisions locating the new terminal near Terminal 2, making it possible to integrate it into the current airport layout without major structural changes. This would require relocating certain technical and maintenance areas to free up space for construction and passenger facilities.

Conesa emphasized that expanding airport infrastructure would benefit not only airlines but also national connectivity, reinforcing Mexico City’s role as a key hub for domestic and international travel. Improved capacity could also strengthen the competitiveness of Mexico’s aviation sector within the region.

However, the project would require close coordination with federal authorities, as well as solid financial and technical planning to ensure feasibility. The proposal adds to ongoing discussions about how to address air traffic saturation in the Mexico City metropolitan area and the future role of the AICM within the broader airport system.

Building a third terminal is seen as a faster alternative compared to developing entirely new airport facilities, as it would leverage existing infrastructure while boosting the airport’s overall operating capacity.
