The renowned luxury car maker Audi is planning to build the electric version of its best-selling model, the Audi Q5 from its soon to be new facility in Mexico.

Audi is expected to set up a factory in Mexico by the end of the third quarter of this year. It will invest around US$1.3 billion for the new facility located in San Jose Chiapa, Puebla and it will eventually become the only global source for Audis Q5 models.

Above all, Audi will roll out its first electric version of its most popular midsize Q5 SUV from this Mexico facility. The facility will start production of the Q5 cars with the usual combustion engines and later introduce the Q5 electric version.

As of now, the existing models of Q5 are produced in Ingolstadt, Germany, which includes production for local German sales as well as for global exports. Local production units also exist in China and India but are intended for local market sales only.

The AutoNews portal cites anonymous sources who claim that "They are training personnel," while there is no clear launch date finalized about Q5 rollout from the Mexican location. The projected production target is for 150,000 cars a year to start with.
