BMW Group celebrates 30 years in Mexico
MEXICO - BMW Group Mexico celebrates its first 30 years in Mexico. And to celebrate it, there is nothing better than a brief review of the history of this German brand in our country, which, by the way, in the last three years has remained as the best-selling premium firm in the Mexican market.
The history of this brand began in the early 1990s, when government authorities in Mexico allowed the entry of imported automobiles, promoting at the same time the export of vehicles, parts and components produced in Mexico.
BMW de México S.A. de C.V. began operations on July 11, 1994. With corporate offices in the Polanco neighborhood of Mexico City. Shortly thereafter, production of the third generation BMW 3 Series, with internal designation E36, began at the Lerma Plant in the State of Mexico.
The plant also produced the fourth generation of the BMW 5 Series (E39), the third generation of the BMW 7 Series (E38) and the fourth generation of the BMW 3 Series (E46). The Lerma Plant also specialized in the production of armored cars, a task that continues to this day with the production of the BMW X5.
The BMW and BMW Motorrad brands were soon joined for some years by the British brands of the Rover Group, which was then owned by the BMW Group. Shortly after, MINI joins the lineup.
In 2014, the construction of a production plant in San Luis Potosi was announced, which today represents an investment of more than US$2 billion. Today, this factory is the production site for the BMW M2, the BMW 2 Series Coupe and is also one of the 3 global production locations for the BMW 3 Series.
Recently, the BMW Group announced that, starting in 2027, the San Luis Potosí plant will produce BMW NEUE KLASSE all-electric vehicles and high-voltage batteries.
