Car sales in Mexico accelerated in 2025

Mexico recorded sales of 1,524,583 light vehicles at the end of 2025, representing growth of 1.3% compared to 2024 and marking the highest volume since 2017, after some Chinese car brands began reporting their information to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).
The automotive industry sold 20,261 additional units compared to the January-December period of 2024, led by Nissan, which remains the automaker with the highest car sales in Mexico, followed by Kia, Mazda, and Toyota.
However, the largest contribution was driven by the presence of Chinese brands such as Geely, Changan, and Great Wall Motor.
On the other hand, General Motors, Ford, and Volkswagen suffered sales losses in the Mexican market in 2025, facing fierce competition from Asian brands that have shown a preference among Mexican consumers.
According to Inegi, car sales in December reached 154,395 units, marking a 4.9% increase over 2024, when 147,140 cars were sold.
The Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA) reported that car sales compared to the previous month showed an increase in new light vehicles sold of 6,034 units, representing a 4.1% increase over November 2025 figures. “This translates into a positive trend for unit sales.”
Guillermo Rosales, president of the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA), pointed out that the domestic market would have reached a total of 1,625,722 units, representing a new sales record in the Mexican market and an estimated annual increase of 5% during 2025.
China's BYD alone claims to have sold 80,000 units in the country, in addition to GAC, Bestune, and others that have yet to report, such as Chirey. In December alone, 154,395 units were sold, marking a 4.9% increase over 2024.
The cumulative growth in 2025 was the lowest level since 2019, when the COVID-19 pandemic occurred, reducing sales by 30%. Excluding Chinese car sales, the automotive industry in Mexico faced a downturn in 2025, mainly due to the labor market situation and consumer caution.
