Car Sales in Mexico Reach Record Levels

Driven by fierce competition in the Mexican automotive market—both among dealers and lenders—sales of new light vehicles rose 2.4% in March, with 131,569 units sold.
Data from INEGI reveal that during the first quarter, dealerships across the country delivered more than 381,000 brand-new cars and trucks—the highest figure recorded for a similar period since the statistics agency began tracking this data—and a 3.7% increase over the result from a year ago.
In this regard, Guillermo Rosales Zárate, executive president of the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA), noted that the market’s actual performance is even stronger than the numbers suggest, considering that several brands do not report their results.
Speaking to the national press, the executive estimated that total sales volume in March was around 140,000 units, representing a 3.8% increase.
Similarly, the AMDA estimates that the cumulative figure for the first quarter reached nearly 406,000 vehicles delivered, a figure that exceeds last year’s figure for the same period by 5%.
Rosales explained that some of the brands that do not disclose this information are Chinese, such as BYD. However, the executive estimates that these automakers’ market share already stands at 16.5%.
One of these Asian companies, Geely, which recently began sharing its data with INEGI, recorded the best sales performance in March, selling 4,219 vehicles—a result that is 319% higher than a year ago.
The brand has accumulated sales of nearly 10,800 units in the first quarter, representing a 272% increase compared to sales levels from a year ago.
Another Chinese company with notable performance was Changan, which recorded deliveries of 5,250 vehicles—73% more units than in the first quarter of 2025.
However, the Chinese automaker with the highest volume is MG Motor, whose first-quarter sales totaled 14,504 vehicles, representing a 30.5% increase compared to last year’s results.
Among the “traditional” automakers, Stellantis reported the strongest results, with cumulative deliveries of more than 25,000 light and medium-duty cars and trucks between January and March—a 19.3% increase compared to the same period a year ago.
Finally, Nissan remains in the lead in terms of market share with 17.6% of the total, having delivered over 67,000 units, including commercial vehicles. This figure represents a moderate growth of 2.7% compared to the first quarter of 2025.
