Coahuila seeks investment in shale gas

Coahuila Governor Manolo Jimenez Salinas announced that he will embark on a working tour of Washington and Texas with the aim of securing investments for natural gas development in the state.
Jimenez noted that the top priority on the agenda will be to hold meetings with companies interested in participating in the “Gas Coahuila” project, which seeks to kickstart shale gas exploitation in the northern region of the state.
“There is interest, and it is widespread,” he said, noting that companies—primarily from the United States and Canada—have expressed their intention to invest in Coahuila once clearer legal conditions are in place.
The governor emphasized that the state encompasses a significant portion of the Burgos Basin, considered one of the country’s most important shale gas reserves, positioning the state as a strategic hub for energy development.
He said that if the project materializes, it would involve investments of billions of dollars and the creation of thousands of jobs in the northern region of the state, which has been affected by the closure of the Altos Hornos de Mexico steel mill and its subsidiaries, the Micare and Mimosa mines.
In addition to its energy potential, the state offers conditions that are attractive to investors, such as security, labor stability, industrial infrastructure, and proximity to the US market.
