Delphi taps three firms to enhance its connected cars, self-driving businesses

Delphi announced today a strategic investment, a strategic agreement and a commercial partnership, each one with different companies aimed to develop systems for new cars that can process and transmit data faster in order to enhance its connected cars and self-driving businesses.

Valens

The tier-one auto supplier revealed a minority investment in Valens, an Israel-based leader in signal processing capability – a key enabler for the expanding connectivity and computing needs in vehicles.

“Demand for increased connectivity, active safety and greater vehicle automation requires best-in-class signal and power distribution capabilities along with a robust data management strategy,” said Kevin Clark, Delphi president and chief executive officer in a press release.

Valens is the developer of HDBaseT, the global standard for transmission of ultra-high definition video, audio, Ethernet and controls data. Valens introduced its HDBaseT Automotive technology to address the challenges of the connected car, including the increasing amount of bandwidth and wiring necessary required for infotainment and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).

Delphi and Valens will be working closely together to advance solutions for in-vehicle connectivity based on HDBaseT Automotive and Delphi’s technologies.

Rosenberger

The auto supplier also completed a strategic agreement with high frequency connectivity company Rosenberger to enhance capabilities in high-speed data transmission.

“Connected vehicle platforms require robust electrical architectures to transfer greater amounts of data at increasingly faster rates and this partnership allows Delphi to work with another industry leader to support common standards for automotive Ethernet architecture,” said Majdi Abulaban, senior vice president and president of the Delphi electrical/electronic architecture segment and president of the engineered components group.

Rosenberger is one of the leading companies in Automotive radio frequency (RF) connection systems with broader experience in other industries such as telecommunication, medical and test and measurement. Rosenberger provides state-of-the-art connection systems to enable future ADAS, automated driving and connected vehicle platforms.

Delphi and Rosenberger have agreed to engage in a technical partnership and will collaborate on high-performance, cost-effective, high-speed Ethernet solutions for the transportation market.

Otonomo

Delphi also signed a commercial partnership agreement with Otonomo, an Israel-based technology company developing a data marketplace for automakers.

Otonomo’s connected car marketplace connects car data from any OEM to service and application providers such as insurance, fleet transportation, vehicle repair services, emergency services and expense control apps. By aggregating, anonymizing, and organizing car data, Otonomo’s marketplace provides OEMs with full control over monetizing the valuable data from connected vehicles.

“The focus of our partnership will be bringing Otonomo’s connected car marketplace to OEM customers,” said Kevin Clark, president and CEO, Delphi Automotive. “Otonomo’s connected car marketplace will be integrated with Delphi products to offer a complete data acquisition and monetization solution for automakers.”

Otonomo complements Delphi’s existing data management capabilities of Control-Tec for data acquisition and Movimento for over-the-air updates. Delphi will offer services from all three companies as a part of a connected car ecosystem, unlocking significant value for OEMs.

Delphi did not disclose the financial terms of the investments and agreements.
