February Leaves Flat Sales for Dealerships Across the Country

After a strong start to the year, the Mexican automotive market lost momentum in February, resulting in sales of 118,297 new light vehicles, a marginal drop of -0.3% compared to the second month of 2025, or a negative difference of only 305 units.

It should be noted that, starting this month, the Inegi count included Zeekr and Lynk & Co., premium brands belonging to the Chinese automaker Geely Holding Group, although the low volumes they still handle do not significantly impact the results.

As a result of this addition, the data and statistics agency also revised last January's figures upward by just over 300 units, bringing the cumulative result for the first two months to slightly over 250,000 vehicles sold.

This volume represents an increase of 4.4% over the same period last year and is the highest figure ever recorded for the first two months of the year.

The executive president of the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA), Guillermo Rosales Zárate, revealed to Forbes Mexico that the prices of vehicles imported from China have not been affected by the tariffs of up to 50% implemented by the Mexican government at the beginning of the year.

The executive explained that automotive companies have sufficient inventory of units that were imported before the new taxes came into effect, so it is likely that upward adjustments will begin to be seen at dealerships in the second half of the year.

This forecast is reflected in the performance of several Chinese brands, such as Changan, whose cumulative sales of 3,280 units in the first two months of the year exceed last year's results by 83.8%.

Other notable cases include Geely, which saw its volume rebound by 247% with the sale of 6,563 vehicles between January and February, while MG Motor reported a 31.6% increase in deliveries of 9,352 units.

In terms of market share, Nissan remains in the lead with an 18% share of sales of almost 45,000 vehicles, a result that is 7.8% higher than a year ago. General Motors follows far behind with a 13% share and sales of 32,420 units, an improvement of 3.5%.

German automaker Volkswagen remains in third place with 11.2% of the market and sales slightly below 28,000 units, including those of its Porsche, Audi, Bentley, and SEAT brands. However, this result is 1.9% lower than that obtained 12 months ago.

Toyota has sold 20,247 units so far this year, including those from its luxury division Lexus. This result gives it a 7.9% market share and represents a 3.4% increase over the same period in 2025.

The Japanese automaker is closely followed by South Korea's Kia, with a 7.3% share and deliveries of 18,234 units, an increase of 4.2% compared to a year ago, while sixth place belongs to Mazda with sales of just over 17,000 units, which translates into a marginal decline of -0.6%.

Stellantis, on the other hand, continued its winning streak with its second double-digit rebound so far this year. The multinational sold 16,240 units in the first two months of the year, representing a 14.6% rebound.

Other outstanding performances include Honda, which, with the delivery of 7,555 units, including those from its Acura division, has accumulated a 10.2% increase in the current year, while its compatriot Mitsubishi has seen a 12.9% increase in sales of 4,651 vehicles.

Ford, on the other hand, reported a modest improvement of 1.6% with sales of 8,566 vehicles, including those of its Lincoln brand, while South Korea's Hyundai accumulated a drop of -7.3% in deliveries of 7,490 units.

In the premium segment, Germany's BMW remains the sales leader with 2,704 units, including those of the Mini brand. However, this result represents a decline of 8.2%.

While the Bavarian firm's performance is not at its best, the situation is even more complicated for its compatriot Mercedes-Benz, with a 33.9% drop in deliveries of 1,345 vehicles, a figure that includes commercial units.

In the luxury niche, Audi was the automaker with the best two-month result, with sales of 1,368 units, representing a 9.1% increase over the same period last year.
