Ford Motor Co. plans to shift production of an electric crossover with a 300-mile range to the Cuautitlan Stamping and Assembly Plant (CSAP) in Mexico from Michigan in order to make way for additional investments on autonomous vehicles in its home state, Automotive News reported citing an internal memo as source.

“This allows us to bring this exciting new vehicle to global customers in a more effective way to support our overreaching business goals,” Ford said in the memo obtained by Automotive News.

The measure is a win-win scenario for the company as it transforms its Flat Rock facilities into an “autonomous vehicle center of excellence” while moving an expected low-margin electric vehicle to Mexico, a country with lower labor costs.
