Former Administration Ruled Out “Plan B” for Texcoco Airport Project

Authorities have confirmed that there was no alternative “Plan B” for the airport project in Texcoco following the cancellation of the original construction plan, according to information published by A21.

Officials and analysts noted that, during the debate and eventual suspension of the project, no formal technical or financial contingency plan was developed in case the airport could not be completed. This revealed significant gaps in long-term infrastructure planning and risk management.

The Texcoco airport project had been designed to replace the saturated main airport serving Mexico City and to become one of the most advanced aviation hubs in Latin America. However, it was halted after a public consultation and a shift in federal infrastructure policy.

Following the cancellation, the government redirected its strategy toward other aviation projects to address capacity constraints in the metropolitan area. Nevertheless, experts argue that the lack of a clearly defined backup plan increased costs, uncertainty, and operational challenges for the national air transport system.

Specialists agree that the absence of a structured alternative highlights weaknesses in the planning of major public works and underscores the need for stronger technical evaluations and long-term strategies in future infrastructure projects.

The Texcoco case continues to be a reference point in discussions about public investment, transparency, and decision-making in Mexico’s transportation sector.
