Mexican firm Grupo Pinsa, owner of Dolores canned tuna brand, will invest US$ 30 million in a new canning and freezing plant at the port of Guaymas, Sonora, on its first bet to enter the sardine market.

The plant will have a production of 750,000 boxes a year to eventually reach 3 million and a freezing capacity of 50 tons per day, according to local media. The plant is scheduled to start operations in March this year.

Around 92% of the production will be supplied to the national market and the rest will be sent to the U.S., during the first year.

In the medium-to-long-term, the firm plans to export to central American and European markets, under their brands Dolores and Portola.

The company has the country's most important sardine fleet with 15 vessels out of 48 in the Gulf of California, which is just over 30% of the fishing share in this area, according to the firm.
