Mercedes-Benz revealed at the Shanghai Auto Show the new entry-level sedan that will go on sale as part of the German automaker’s upcoming 8-model-strong fourth-generation compact car portfolio.

The Concept A Sedan is designed with the proportions of a dynamic, coupé-like and simultaneously compact, premium sedan.

Set to reach the U.S. by early 2019, the production version of the new 4-door concept has been conceived to challenge the likes of the Audi A3 and next-generation BMW 1-Series sedans.

Mercedes is expected to start replacing the current A-Class model line-up next year, by the time the new plant in Aguascalientes, Mexico, will start production of compact cars.

Company officials have indicated in the past that A-Class sedans would be assembled in Aguascalientes, but those plans are now under review.

Another model Mercedes-Benz has considered building in Mexico is the GLC. Both GLC and the A-Class are produced on the same assembly line of Valmet Automotive plant, located in Uusikaupunki, Finland.

The contract between Valmet and Mercedes-Benz expires by the end of this year.
