Auto sales in Mexico fall 5.3% in June, up 2.9% for first half of 2017

Last June, auto dealers established in Mexico sold 127,410 cars and light trucks, down 5.3% compared to the same month of 2016, figures from the Mexican Auto Dealers Association (AMDA). During the first semester automakers delivered 743,051 new vehicles to Mexican customers, up 2.9% compared to the same period of 2017.

Nissan, the biggest auto seller in Mexico with a 24.7% market share, reported a sales decline of 7.8% to 30,881 units. Year-to-date sales for the Japanese automaker totaled 183,565 vehicles, up 1.5% compared to the first half of 2016. Its premium brand Infiniti sold 166 units, down -12.6%. During the first half of 2017 sales totaled 988 vehicles, a drop of 2.8%.

General Motors, second biggest seller in the country with a 16.6% market share, saw its sales sink 27.1% to 21,262 vehicles. From January to June sales for the Detroit automaker in Mexico totaled 123,250 units, down 8.4% compared to the same period of 2016. Its figures include the brands Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac.

Volkswagen sold 20,752 vehicles in June including its brands Audi, Seat and Porsche, a small gain of 0.5%. Year-to-date sales totaled 115,898 units, a decrease of 2.0%.

Toyota sales totaled 7,850 units in June, just 26 vehicles more (0.3%) compared to the same month of 2016. Year-to-date sales for the Japanese automaker totaled 51,313 cars and light trucks, a double digit increase of 11.7%.

FCA México, which includes the brands Dodge, Fiat, Chrysler, Jeep, Ram and Mitsubishi, saw a sales decline of 3.2% to 8,010 units. Year-to-date sales increased 3.9% to 48,424 vehicles.

Honda reported sales of 7,194 vehicles in June and year-to-date sales of 43,727 units, which meant increases of 6.3% and 8.9% respectively. Its luxury brand Acura sold 177 units in June, down 2.7%, but its year-to-date sales increased 10.5% to 1,022 units.

Korean automaker Kia, which just completed its second year selling cars in the Mexican market, sold 7,430 vehicles, a skyrocketing 42.4% increase. Year-to-date sales boosted 74.47% to 41,055 units.

Ford Motor Company sold 6,662 cars and light trucks in June, down 14.4%. Year-to-date sales totaled 40,113, also a drop of 8.2%. Its luxury brand Lincoln reported sales of 88 units in June and year-to-date sales of 728 vehicles, figures that represented decreases of 52.9% and 35.1% respectively.

Mazda sold 4,441 vehicles in June, up 11.8%. Its year-to-date sales saw a small decline of 0.7% to 25,117 units.

Korean automaker Hyundai reported sales of 3,703 vehicles, a 20.1% hike compared to June 2016. Year-to-date sales increased 22.6% to 20,561 units. Combined sales of Kia and its sister brand Hyundai now make up to an 8.73% market share in Mexico, above Toyota’s 6.9% share but still way below Volkswagen, third biggest seller in Mexico with a 15.6% market share.

Competition between major premium German automakers in Mexico has become really tight, with figures barely differing from each other. 

Mercedes-Benz sold 1,419 units in June, a skyrocketing 52.9% boost compared to same month of 2016. Year-to-date sales increased 36.5% to 8,426 vehicles.

BMW sold 1,465 vehicles in June, up 4.3%. Year-to-date sales totaled 7,867 units, representing a 17.1% hike.

Audi sold 1,379 vehicles last month, up 4.1%. Year-to-date sales dropped 5.4% to 6,980 units.
