Ford is working on a new compact pickup that could find its way into the U.S. market by 2022, revealed Automobile Magazine. The unit would slot below the Ford Ranger midsize pickup arriving in U.S. dealerships early next year, but it would be bigger than the Fiesta-based subcompact Courier, a small pickup that Ford used to build in Brazil between 1998 and 2013.
Although the compact model will not have the profit margins of the F-150 or the Ford Ranger, it is considered a necessary product by the Dearborn, Michigan, automaker to regain its leadership in the sale of pickups, since, despite the fact that the F-150 is the best-selling product in the segment, the automaker is still behind General Motors in total pickups sales, thanks to deliveries of the Chevrolet Colorado and its twin the GMC Canyon.
The pickup will be based on the next-generation Focus platform and it will be built in the Cuautitlan assembly plant, replacing Fiesta hatchback and sedan production in that facility. Chances for the compact Ford pickup coming to the U.S. market will be largely determined by tariffs and trade deals negotiated by the Trump administration in the next 24 months.
