An unexpected popularity of the BMW 2 Series Coupe in the U.S. market has led officials of the German premium carmaker to consider the new assembly plant in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, to build in there the next generation of such vehicle.

According to the specialized site BMWBlog “there’s a high probability that the 2 Series Coupe will be made at the new San Potosi plant in Mexico, on the same assembly line as the upcoming 3 Series”.

Citing “sources inside Munich”, the report says the next-gen coupe will be developed over the same CLAR architecture that the new 3 Series is made on, making it more likely to be built in San Luis Potosi, where the production of the all-new 3 Series will officially begin next year.

Such move would make the 2 Series more profitable while reducing the exposure to potential trade wars between the U.S. and the European Union, where the current generation of the 2 Series in made. Production of the next-gen 2 Series is scheduled to kick off by mid-2021.
