Mexican Automotive Market Has Best January in History

New car dealerships in Mexico sold the highest number of light vehicles ever recorded for a January, with 131,472 units sold, an 8.7% increase compared to January 2025, according to official data.

“We’re experiencing a very interesting moment after a strong year-end demand — we’re starting 2026 with the same trend,” said Guillermo Rosales Zárate, CEO of the Mexican Automotive Dealers Association (AMDA). He estimates that actual sales may have exceeded 139,800 vehicles, representing a 9.9% increase when including automakers that do not report official figures.

The strong performance was driven by intense competition among financing companies and price wars between manufacturers, especially due to the growing number of models imported from China.

Nissan led the market with 18.8% share and nearly 25,000 units sold, a 21.8% increase year over year. General Motors ranked second with 12.4% market share, followed by Volkswagen with 10.7%. Toyota and Kia also posted solid growth, while Mazda and Stellantis recorded double-digit increases. Chinese brands such as MG, Changan, and Geely showed especially strong gains.
