Mexico-Cuba pact to continue exporting crude oil

President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated that the Mexican government is working alongside the Cuban government to resume oil shipments to the island through the trade agreements established by and between the two countries.

“Mexico has every right to send fuel, whether for humanitarian or commercial reasons, but we do not want to harm the country—with tariffs resulting from Donald Trump’s oil embargo. We are working with them on both issues.”

When referring to a possible solution to resume shipments of Mexican crude oil, the president noted that private companies have expressed their intention to purchase the fuel from PEMEX to market it on the island, and that this does not necessarily require a government-to-government agreement.

“There are private companies that buy oil from Mexico and report where they are taking it. Because it’s not necessarily a government-to-government agreement; there are companies that specialize in fuel transportation.”

Sheinbaum assured that Mexico will continue to send humanitarian aid to the island; and at the same time, she emphasized her opposition to US measures against the nation:
“There should be no blockades, because trade blockades harm the people. Formally, they’re directed against governments, but who do they harm? The people.”
