Mexico has the talent to excel in the space industry
MEXICO - Mexico has the talent and the industry to stand out worldwide in the space sector, said Spanish astronaut Pablo Alvarez during an interview with the media.
“I leave Mexico convinced that the country has what it takes to be a super important player in the aerospace industry worldwide,” said the cosmonaut.
For Alvarez, he also mentioned that “the spark” that will detonate the industry in Mexico is “believing that they can do it” and, of course, greater investment in the sector.
According to data from the Ministry of Economy (SE), in the period January to June 2024, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Aerospace Equipment Manufacturing was of US$161 million, distributed in reinvestment of profits of US$128 million, intercompany accounts of US$33.4 million and new investments (confidential data).
According to the institution directed by Raquel Buenrostro, between January 1999 and June 2024, the accumulated amount of FDI in Aerospace Equipment Manufacturing was of US$4.38 billion, and historically, (from January 1999 to June 2024) the states that have received the highest FDI are Baja California, Chihuahua and Coahuila de Zaragoza
In Álvarez's words, Mexico already has the necessary talent and has the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), among other institutions, to train more young people interested in space research.
