Mexico Seeks to Refine the USMCA on Specific Trade Issues

Mexico’s Economy Secretary, Marcelo Ebrard, said the country is working to ensure that the trade agreement between Mexico, the United States, and Canada continues and is improved in concrete commercial areas.

He explained that during a recent meeting in Washington with U.S. authorities, Mexico presented its priority points for the review of the agreement. Among the main issues discussed were the tariffs on steel and aluminum imposed by the United States.

Ebrard described these tariffs as economically dysfunctional and very costly for the countries involved. He emphasized that such measures negatively affect regional competitiveness and increase production costs.

He also noted that consultations with Mexican business and economic sectors show broad support for maintaining and strengthening the agreement. According to him, the objective is not to weaken the treaty, but to modernize it and adapt it to current trade conditions.

Additionally, he highlighted recent cooperation between Mexico and the United States on critical minerals, which are essential for technological and industrial development. He said this coordination is part of broader efforts to align trade and industrial policies in North America.

The review process is expected to move forward in the coming months, with the goal of reinforcing regional integration and promoting more balanced and efficient trade.
