Semarnat grants land use permits to Tesla to set up Gigafactory in Nuevo Leon

NUEVO LEON – The federal government, through the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat), granted land use permits to Tesla to install its Gigafactory in the municipality of Santa Catarina, Nuevo Leon.

The notification was made on Monday, December 11 by the Department of Natural Resources and Wildlife of the Subdelegation of Management for Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Semarnat in Nuevo Leon.

The document, with official letter number 139.04.1.-1045 (23), authorizes the change of forest land use modality A, for an area of 260.818283 hectares, for the development of the Gigafactory.

The Gigafactory is a battery factory for electric vehicles that Tesla plans to build in Santa Catarina. The plant will have a production capacity of 50 gigawatt hours per year, making it one of the largest battery factories in the world.

Construction of the Gigafactory is scheduled to begin in 2024 and is estimated to generate more than 10,000 jobs.

The authorization of the land use permits is an important step for the development of the Gigafactory and for the consolidation of Nuevo León as a center for the production of electric vehicles.
