South Texas mayors meet with Nuevo Leon governor to promote economic collaboration

Mayors from Brownsville, Laredo and San Antonio met in Monterrey with the governor of Nuevo Leon, Samuel Garcia, to discuss issues related to trade, border infrastructure and economic collaboration.

During the meeting, the authorities addressed issues related to bilateral trade, border infrastructure and strategic projects such as the Colombia Customs and the new highway that connects with Texas, highlighting its growing capacity for commercial crossings.

Governor Samuel García emphasized that there are many common interests between the two regions, such as trade, investment attraction and preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, in which Monterrey will be one of the venues.

The meeting took place in the Juarez Hall of the Government Palace and was attended by the Mayor of Brownsville, John Cowen; of Laredo, Victor Treviño; of San Antonio, Ron Nirenberg; as well as the representative of the Department of Economic Development of San Antonio, Sherry Dowlatshahi, and the Consul General of the United States in Monterrey, Melissa A. Bishop.

Laredo Mayor Victor Treviño underscored the importance of maintaining cross-border collaboration and highlighted the progress made through the Colombia Bridge, a key infrastructure in the exchange between the two regions.

John Cowen, Mayor of Brownsville, also agreed on the need to continue working together to identify economic opportunities that benefit both communities.

At the end of the meeting, the participants had a brief tour of the Government Palace and a symbolic exchange of gifts. The meeting was also attended by Marco Antonio González Valdez, Secretary of Regional and Agricultural Development, and Maricarmen Martínez Villarreal, Secretary of Tourism.
