Tourist’s numbers and spending; on the rise

International tourism in Mexico kicked off 2026 with a higher influx of visitors and a slight increase in spending during their stays: a combination that confirms the sector’s vitality and points to a recovery that is now firmly established following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In February, 8.12 million international travelers entered the country; a figure 8.5% higher than in the same month of 2025, according to data from INEGI.
Spending by international tourists reached US$3.12 billion, a figure 0.3% higher compared to the second month of last year; while spending by international day-trippers totaled US$255 million, representing a 1.9% increase.
Regarding country of residence, the majority of non-border tourists who traveled to Mexico came from the United States, with 1,295,151 entries; 356,102 arrived from South America and the Caribbean Islands; and 303,254 from Canada.
INEGI noted that border tourists are those who enter the country and remain in the border zone without traveling beyond that area, generally for short stays, while non-border tourists are those who travel into the interior of the country and tend to stay longer, so their spending and economic impact tend to be greater.
