Toyota increased production volume in Mexico during 2017, official figures show

Toyota Motor announced that its North American plants built 1.98 million vehicles in 2017, which represented a 6.6% decrease compared to the 2.12 units built the year before. Despite the setback, production volume of the Japanese automaker increased in Mexico.

Toyota operates a manufacturing facility in Tijuana, Baja California that supplies Tacoma midsize pickups to the North American market. Last year that plant built 104,622 units, a figure that represented a 7.7% increase compared to the 97,145 pickups manufactured in 2016.

The Tijuana facility is in the final stage of a US$ 150 million expansion which will increase the production capacity by 60% to 160,000 units a year. The Tacoma is also built at an assembly plant in San Antonio, Texas. Last year the Texas facility built 129,955 units, which represented a 1.6% increase over 2016.

Meanwhile, at a manufacturing facility owned by Mazda in Celaya, Guanajuato, Toyota built 44,020 Yaris iA in 2017. That figure represented a growth of 1.2% versus 2016.

A new Toyota manufacturing facility is also under construction in Guanajuato. Scheduled to start production by 2019, the facility is expected to build 100,000 Tacoma pickups per year.

Toyota reported U.S. sales of 2,434,515 vehicles during 2017, including its Toyota and Lexus brands, a decrease of 0.6% versus 2016. For the year, the Toyota division alone reported sales of 2,129,383 vehicles, a 0.5% increase.

The Tacoma saw its sales increase 3.4% to 198,124 units in the U.S. market. Sales of the Yaris iA totaled 35,727 units, a 27.7% hike compared to 2016.

In Mexico, the Japanese automaker saw its sales increase 0.5% to a record 105,464 cars and light trucks, ranking as the fourth best-selling brand in the country during 2017.
