Weakness in Mexican Automotive Market Persists in September

Sales of new light vehicles remained flat in September, with 117,182 units sold, a figure that exceeds that of the same month in 2024 by only 393 vehicles, or 0.3%.

This is revealed in the latest report from Inegi, although it should be noted that several Chinese brands are omitted from this count, including Chirey, its subsidiary Omoda, Geely, and BYD, to name a few, so it is possible that the Mexican market is more dynamic than the official figures reflect.

According to the Administrative Registry of the Light Vehicle Automotive Industry (RAIAVL), cumulative sales for the first nine months already total 1,075,188 units, almost 6,000 fewer vehicles than in the same period last year, which is equivalent to -0.6%.

However, the current sales volume represents the fourth highest result in the last 10 years, exceeding even the sales level recorded in the two years prior to the pandemic.

Among the best-performing brands in September was Kia, which reported a 16.2% increase with sales of 9,300 units.

The South Korean brand has delivered a total of 81,146 vehicles this year, which is 6% higher than in the same period in 2024.

With this result, Kia consolidates its fifth place in the national ranking, maintaining a market share of 7.5%.

Ford was another brand to report double-digit growth with sales of 4,128 units, representing a 12.6% increase over September last year.

The blue oval automaker has sold a total of nearly 39,000 units this year, just 0.6% higher than the volume in 2024.

With this result, the Dearborn, Michigan-based company remains tied with Hyundai in eighth place with a 3.6% market share each, although in hard data, the South Korean company ranks below by a difference of just over 500 units.

The undisputed leader, Nissan, also reported double-digit growth of 11.5% with the delivery of 20,872 vehicles last month.

The Japanese automaker's sales in 2025 already exceed 196,000 units, representing solid growth of 7.4% over last year, while its market share remains at 18.3%.

Among the companies that reported declines in sales, Stellantis stands out, with a 9.3% decline in sales of 6,367 cars and trucks. Its cumulative volume for the year is just over 62,000 units, representing a decline of -7.8%.

General Motors also performed poorly. The just over 15,000 deliveries recorded in September represented a drop of -6.3%, while its cumulative sales for the year, at 142,698 units, reflect a decline of -5.2%.

Mazda sold 7,430 vehicles last month, representing a drop of -4.3%. However, the Japanese brand maintains an 8.8% growth in cumulative sales for the year, which amount to just over 75,000 units.

Toyota and Volkswagen also reported declines of -2.9% and -0.1% in their September sales, respectively.

However, it is noteworthy that in the cumulative result, both companies maintain the same level of deliveries as last year, with just over 90,000 vehicles for the Japanese brand and almost 98,000 units for the German brand.

In the premium segment, BMW and its subsidiary Mini stood out, together recording a sales upturn of almost 40% with more than 1,600 units sold.

From January to September, the two brands sold more than 14,000 vehicles, representing a double-digit increase of 14.6%.

Land Rover was another luxury brand that reported solid results, with deliveries increasing by 28.3% last month, although this volume is only 225 units.

In the first nine months of the year, the company has sold more than 1,600 vehicles, a figure that exceeds the result for the same period in 2024 by 22.7%.

Mercedes-Benz, on the other hand, recorded a 10.7% drop in sales of 844 units, a figure that includes commercial vehicles.

The German brand has accumulated sales of just under 8,000 vehicles from January to September, representing a 14.6% decline.

A similar case is that of its compatriot Audi, which despite seeing its deliveries last month increase by 2.8%, maintains a drop of -14.7% in its total sales for the year with a total of 6,646 units.
