A new airport will be built in Tulum: AMLO

TULUM – The President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, announced that a new airport will be built in Tulum, which would represent a direct competition for the Cancun air terminal, which is part of Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (Asur), however, the repercussions for the latter will be minimal, analysts said.

Carlos Hermosillo, an independent stock market specialist, explained that although it would seem that this new terminal would be competition for Cancunc airport, it would have an important collateral effect in the medium and long term, since it could boost the region even more.

On the other hand, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced that an agreement for the construction of a new airport in Tulum was reached with the communal landholders of Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

He added that it is important to consider that the Tulum airport's vocation would be partially oriented to cargo and military service, so it would not have a similar capacity to Cancun's airport in terms of commercial passengers.

Federal resources have already been released to begin preliminary studies for the airport in the southern part of the country, and since the end of last year, work has been underway to create a controlling company that can be administered by the Army, which will be in charge of operating this terminal.

Likewise, President Lopez Obrador mentioned that he will ensure the good administration of both the train and the airports, since the profits of this company will be used to strengthen the finances for the pensioners and retirees of the Armed Forces.
