General Motors Halts Operations in Silao

General Motors halted operations at its pickup truck assembly plant in Silao, Guanajuato, during the first two weeks of July and will implement another two-week shutdown in August, according to a Reuters report citing two people familiar with the situation.

The US automaker confirmed the shutdowns to the media, although without specifying the dates, while downplaying the events by stating that “the scheduled shutdown weeks at GM Silao are part of a standard operating process focused on optimizing production at our manufacturing complex.”

The agency insisted in its report that while summer shutdowns are common in the industry, it is unusual for GM to carry out so many weeks of shutdowns at a plant that produces popular models such as the Silverado and Sierra, whose sales performed well in the first half of the year.

However, it should be noted that various analysis and consulting firms have predicted that this positive trend will not extend into the second half of the year due, among other factors, to price increases on units as a result of the entry into force of tariffs.
