Mexico Can Drive Technological Innovation Without Starting from Scratch

Young Mexicans don't need to invent entirely new technologies to push the country forward in tech development. Building on and improving existing technologies is a practical and effective path to innovation, according to Víctor Santiago Flores, CEO of ThinkSafe Gtt NetCorp Group.

In an interview during the Second DroneMex 2025 Congress held in Querétaro, Santiago Flores emphasized that the real opportunity lies in adapting and enhancing current technologies.

"There's no need to create something flashy or extraordinary from the ground up. The key is to identify the right opportunities and begin working on implementation projects," he said.

He pointed out that many well-established technology companies already offer open development systems. This opens doors for young professionals to engage, contribute, and grow without needing significant investment.

"We can make great strides by working with existing platforms and begin positioning ourselves not only in the national market, but also internationally," he added.

Rather than inventing a brand-new drone, he explained, it's more effective to create precise solutions that address real market needs.

“We are behind in terms of hundreds of millions of dollars in investment, but that doesn’t mean we can’t catch up. We just need to be strategic,” he stated.

He clarified that developing entirely original technology often takes years—time that favors global tech giants. However, leveraging existing tools to build applications, software, or hardware can give Mexico the technical and economic base to foster genuine innovation.

As an example, he mentioned a U.S. company that repurposed a commercial drone to deliver a lifebuoy and survival kit for sea rescues.

“They didn’t invent the drone or the software. They just designed an accessory that solved a real problem. That’s where the opportunity lies,” he explained.

That product, he said, is now selling in large volumes, despite not being based on a new drone design. The key was spotting a need and creating a smart, simple solution. “This is exactly the kind of innovation young people in Mexico can bring to the table,” he stressed.
