Toyota Begins Differential Production in Alabama

The Toyota Motor Manufacturing Alabama (TMMAL) plant began production of the new generation of differentials for various Japanese automaker trucks, including the Tacoma.

This operation involved an investment of $282 million and led to the creation of 350 direct skilled jobs.

“The members of the Toyota Alabama team are committed to mastering the new processes and techniques required for these products and are fully prepared to take on the exciting challenge of machining and assembling differentials,” said Marc Perry, president of Toyota Alabama, during the opening.

In addition to three types of differentials, TMMAL supplies nearly half of the engines required by Toyota's operations across North America. These engines are found in seven of the nine vehicles the company produces in the region.

“Being part of the new product lines at the plant generates a lot of energy,” said Alex Potter, a member of the Toyota Alabama team for almost two years.

“Our plant is known as an engine powerhouse, and we are confident that our proven success will carry over to the assembly of these new differentials,” added the operator.

Last year, the plant produced more than 895,000 engines.
