Mexico strides in energy innovation

Jorge Isla Samperio, Undersecretary of Planning and Energy Transition, emphasized that Mexico is making progress in innovation to produce clean energy.

“There are more than 20,000 depleted oil wells in Mexico, and it would be wonderful to develop a technology that would allow us to generate 10,000 megawatts of electricity from the heat of those depleted wells,” he said.

He explained that producing geothermal energy from depleted oil wells is an innovation for generating clean energy currently under development in the country. He also noted that the first green hydrogen plants will be activated in Baja California Sur.

The official also noted that at an exploration and production technology center, there is a plant that will manufacture catalysts to help produce diesel and gasoline through sulfur processing.
