Third round of USMCA reviews begins

Mexico City will host the third round of bilateral negotiations between Mexico and the United States for the joint review of the USMCA. The negotiating teams from the two countries will hold meetings over three days.

The agenda for this third round includes trade in steel, aluminum, and their derivatives; the automotive sector; economic security; labor conditions; agriculture; and electronic payment services.

Canada will not participate in this meeting, as it is limited to the bilateral relationship between Mexico and the United States.

The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) acknowledged Mexico’s recent progress on various fronts identified in the 2026 National Trade Estimate Report on Foreign Trade Barriers.

Regarding economic security, the agency highlighted that Mexico harmonized its export controls with those of the United States through a measure on dual-use items.

The joint review mechanism, provided for in the treaty itself, allows for periodic adjustments without requiring a complete renegotiation of the agreement, which remains in effect until 2036.
