Port of Lazaro Cardenas reports annual growth

The Port of Lazaro Cardenas handled 15,555,241 metric tons of cargo during the first half of 2026, a figure that represented a 16% increase compared to the same period in 2025 and set a new all-time record for the port facility. With this result, the port reaffirmed its position as one of the main logistics hubs for Mexican foreign trade and maintained outstanding performance in both domestic and international supply chains.

The growth was driven primarily by containerized cargo, which reached 7,649,286 metric tons, equivalent to a 14% year-over-year increase. In this segment, 1,343,307 TEUs were handled between January and June, consolidating the Michoacan port as one of the main entry and exit points for international trade in Mexico.

The port’s performance is also noteworthy given that it was achieved amid various operational challenges. During the first half of the year, the port faced situations such as a temporary closure due to Cyclone Boris, concerns raised by the shipping industry regarding vessel turnaround times, and warnings about customs capacity saturation—factors that led to the extension of customs operating hours. Despite this, the port maintained a growth trajectory that reflects the strength of demand associated with trans-Pacific trade and the relocation of supply chains.

Furthermore, this new record comes at a time when the Michoacan Plan was announced, which calls for an investment of US$24 billion to strengthen the state’s infrastructure and connectivity. In this context, the growth achieved by Lazaro Cardenas highlights the port’s potential for expansion and the importance of continuing to develop rail, highway, and intermodal infrastructure to accommodate the expected increase in logistics flows.
