The closure of the San Pedro Sugar Mill is still pending
The governor of Veracruz, Rocio Nahle Garcia, has inspected the facilities at the San Pedro Sugar Mill, one of the main economic drivers in the Papaloapan region, following its closure earlier this month due to financial difficulties. This inspection was conducted to assess operating conditions and make progress in managing and seeking to preserve jobs and the sugarcane industry in the region, according to the state administration.
The complex employed more than 500 permanent and temporary workers, in addition to a workforce of nearly 1,000 people associated with the factory. The complex processed up to 1.2 million metric tons of sugarcane, of which between 850,000 and 900,000 metric tons were under a standard contract.
Accompanied by the Secretary of Economic and Port Development, Ernesto Perez Astorga, and the Secretary of Finance and Planning, Miguel Santiago Reyes Hernandez, the governor explained that one of the alternatives proposed during the working group meeting with the company responsible for the cargo is to allow staff to enter the premises to begin maintenance work while the employment situation and outstanding wages are reviewed.
After touring the mill and steam turbine areas, the governor emphasized that she would bring the matter to the attention of President Claudia Sehinbaum Pardo in order to discuss the future of Ingenio San Pedro and the options that would ensure its continued operation. She also proposed implementing a specialized maintenance and cleaning program, similar to those used in industrial facilities such as refineries.
As immediate support for workers, the State System for Integral Family Development was informed that food baskets would be distributed to those employees who have not yet received their pay, so they can meet their families’ basic needs while the necessary steps are being taken.
During the meeting, the employees expressed their willingness to participate in the plant's recovery efforts and resume their work.
