Cooling demand peaks in Bajío and center

In Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Puebla, and Jalisco, the rate of installation of air conditioning and climate control systems is increasing by between 25% and 30% annually.

“These are new systems because people increasingly want to be comfortable in their homes,” said Darío Ibargüengoitia, president of the organizing committee for the Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVACR) Congress, during the press conference for AHR Expo Mexico 2026.

States in the north and southeast have seen an increase of between 8 and 12 percent, driven primarily by “the replacement of older equipment with more advanced technologies.” Nationwide, more than 1 million air conditioning units are installed each year for various applications.

The HVACR sector is worth more than US$10.4 billion annually, equivalent to 0.57% of the national GDP, with an average growth rate of 7% over the past five years.

Jalisco ranked third among the nation's producers in this sector, with 72 of the country's 674 manufacturing companies; Nuevo León and Chihuahua followed. In 2024, the state recorded a growth of US$480 million in imports of air conditioning equipment, taking first place nationally in this category.

“Jalisco is not only a leader in agriculture, but also a technology hub where more than 64% of technology exports come from the electronics and semiconductor industries,” said Pedro Paredes, president of the Guadalajara chapter of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), “We are the leading exporter among non-border states of these types of electronic components, which require a significant amount of energy due to their cooling needs.”

Jalisco has become a highly competitive economic powerhouse that requires climate control, refrigeration equipment, and technology to support its development. The Bajío region—specifically Querétaro and Jalisco—has emerged as a strategic area for cooling demand.

“One advantage is that these are regions with ‘temperate climates that don't have harsh winters—and especially not scorching summers—so they can focus solely on cooling the equipment, racks, and electronic systems without having to worry so much about the outside temperature,’ explained Pedro Paredes.”
