Stellantis Considers Producing Heavy-Duty Pickup Trucks in Michigan

Stellantis has been quietly asking its suppliers to estimate the cost of a potential move of production of the Ram Heavy-Duty pickup truck from the Saltillo plant to the Warren Truck Assembly plant in Michigan, AutoNews reported, citing two executives from companies that supply components for these programs as sources.

The executives clarified that the review is preliminary, so it could very well be a routine production cost study, and reiterated that no decision has been made yet.

A spokesperson for the multinational automaker, when asked by the trade publication, declined to comment on what he described as mere “speculation.”

It is worth noting that of the three major Detroit automakers, Stellantis is the only one that produces this product line in Mexico, which leaves one of its most profitable vehicle lines vulnerable to tariffs.

Analysts consulted by AutoNews warn that any decision on this matter will be difficult because, although the Michigan plant has available capacity, the higher costs of assembling these pickup trucks there could make the resulting profit margins insufficient to justify the decision.
