Port of Manzanillo at 80% of its capacity

The Port of Manzanillo, Colima, is currently operating at around 80% of its capacity, “a level considered normal and with plenty of capacity to spare for the coming years,” José Antonio Contreras Ruiz, CEO of Contecon Manzanillo. He added that “fortunately, there has been significant investment; the terminals have invested, and Contecon is set to increase its installed capacity by more than 40%.”

Manzanillo handles 45% of Mexico’s containerized cargo and has seen 70% growth over the past five years. “Few countries in the world have experienced such a surge in activity,” he noted. “I invite those who are commenting on this to come and see the reality for themselves: Manzanillo has more than enough capacity for the coming years.”

That said, this does not mean there are no challenges: “We have faced many problems” attributed to a “lack of planning and vision regarding what Manzanillo might face in the future, as well as issues with roads, access, and customs capacity.”
Contreras Ruiz highlighted recent investments by the government, customs authorities, and the terminals themselves, stating, “We want Manzanillo to continue improving.”
