GM is restructuring its workforce in Ramos Arizpe
General Motors (GM) has begun a workforce reduction at its industrial complex in Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila, due to the upcoming discontinuation of production of the Chevrolet Blazer with an internal combustion engine (ICE), which will end in October 2026.
The process calls for the layoff of approximately 200 workers from various areas of the plant, including team leaders, supervisors, and production technicians. The company reported that the measure is necessary to align its workforce with the manufacturing plan for the coming years and to reconfigure its assembly lines.
Similarly, the company has stated that the employees who were let go received the appropriate severance pay in accordance with the Federal Labor Law, and it also acknowledges the contributions made by the staff affected by this change.
With the end of production of the internal-combustion Blazer, Ramos Arizpe will focus part of its operations on the manufacture of electric vehicles, including the Chevrolet Equinox EV, Chevrolet Blazer EV, and Cadillac OPTIQ.
According to the company, the space previously used for the internal-combustion model’s production line will be repurposed to prepare for the assembly of the Chevrolet Groove, whose production will begin in 2027.
This move opens up opportunities for regional suppliers. Alberto Piñones, a board member of the Coahuila Automotive Industry Cluster (CIAC), has said that GM is exploring new local suppliers for various powertrain components for the vehicles that will be manufactured in Ramos Arizpe,
As for the performance of the automotive industry in Coahuila, the CIAC advisor estimates that activity may remain stable during the last quarter of the year, in line with what was observed during the first half of the year.
Piñones noted that the industry has managed to maintain its production levels compared to the previous period. This has allowed some plants to operate at an average of 80% of their capacity.
At a time when new investments have come to a standstill, he explained that companies are focusing on making more efficient use of their installed capacity and implementing strategies to increase their production volumes.
