On Tuesday, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) revealed an ambitious investment plan to increase production capacity for vehicles from its Jeep brand in Michigan.
During the announcement, the Italian-American automaker confirmed that the production of the new Ram Heavy Duty will remain at the plant in Saltillo, Coahuila, reversing the decision made two years ago to shift said work to Michigan.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles announced a US$4.5 billion investment in five Michigan plants, including the opening of a new assembly facility in Detroit, the first in the region in nearly three decades.
FCA said it would invest US$1.6 billion to convert the Mack Avenue Engine factory to an assembly plant for the next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee and a new, three-row Jeep SUV. In all, the company said it will add production at five factories in metro Detroit while creating 6,500 new jobs.
Another US$900 million investment at Jefferson North Assembly Plant to retool and modernize the factory for continued production of the Dodge Durango and next-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee.
A Warren Truck investment announced in 2017 increases to US$1.5 billion for production of the new Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer as well as continued assembly of Ram 1500 Classic.
As a result of this investment announcement, production of the new Ram Heavy Duty will continue at its current location in Saltillo, Coahuila, instead of moving such production work to Warren.
