MEXICO — Vehicle manufacturers in Mexico ask to be included in the list of essential sectors that will be able to maintain part of their operations during the health emergency decreed in the country in order to face the coronavirus and by which the suspension of non-essential activities was ordered.

"In order for us to maintain workforce and continue to benefit millions of Mexicans,  we need to be classified as essential, so that we can respond when economic activity gets back to normal," stated Fausto Cuevas, general director of the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA).

He stressed that automakers would be willing to dedicate part of their production lines to the manufacture of medical supplies in order to face the health contingency.

“Most of the brands that operate in the country, temporarily suspended their operations this month, but they hope to gradually get back to normality as soon as possible,” Cuevas explained.
